Occupational health and safety Risk Assessment in a manufacturing site based on (Hazard Analysis) HAZAN: A method of assessing the tasks of exposure to carcinogens in industry
Background: Human resources are considered to be a valid asset in each and every society; and it is crucial to take effort in order to protect and safe keep this asset. Occupational accidents and incidents impose the Iranian companies, employers, and families to a remarkable amount of direct and indirect compensations each year. 4% of national gross production is spent on the due compensations.
Methods: This survey is conducted in 2019 in a manufacturing site based on a descriptive- analytical method, using Hazard analysis technique (HAZAN). As a result of this all occupational hazards on this site are categorized into 4 risk levels (level 1: unacceptable, level 2: inadequate, level 3: acceptable in case of control measures, level 4: pleasant), later identified, assessed, and adequate control measures are determined and executed.
Results: During this risk assessment, at first 138 stations were assessed as a result of which 1.45% were in risk level 1, 18.11% were in risk level 2, 60.15% were in risk level 3, and 20.29% were put in the category of risk level 4.
conclusion: The mentioned risk assessment procedure was conducted in 2012, through participation of risk assessing team (including technical department, manufacturing department, and HSE department), and between 2013 and 2017 it was executed company wide. The important point regarding this phenomenon is the number of accidents and incidents in years prior to conducting this assessment. In 2011 there were 16 incident reports and 333 lost days, and in 2012 there were 14 incidents and 162 lost days, and in 2013 the statistics reduced to 5 incidents and 80 lost days, and in 2014, 3 incidents and 65 lost days, in 2015, there were 2 incidents and 30 lost days, in 2015, 2 incidents and 15 lost days, and finally in 2016 there was only 1 incident along with 10 lost days. The descending trend in the number of incidents and the lost time is obviously indicating the compliance of the conducted risk assessment with due industry and is proficiently proving its efficiency in reducing and controlling risks. The significant case in this study is the commitment of the management in implementing OH&S procedures, control measures, and providing continuous training for the employees which signifies the effective role in achieving the target.
